RE_tractable FAQ
All you need to know
What is the Ride Engine RE_Tractable Reel Leash?
The RE_Tractable is a compact, lightweight board leash developed specifically for wing foiling, parawinging, and downwind foiling. Its retractable design keeps the leash webbing stored inside the housing until it is needed, reducing exposed leash material around the board and body.
How much does the RE_Tractable leash weigh?
The RE_Tractable weighs only 100 grams. Its compact profile is designed to remain unobtrusive and nonrestrictive, to the point that you may forget you are wearing it during a session.
How long is the retractable webbing?
The RE_Tractable contains 1.8 meters of spooled Kevlar reinforced webbing. During a crash, the webbing extends to create separation between the foiler, board, foil, and inflatable equipment.
Why is creating separation during a crash important?
Moving the board and foil farther away from the body can help reduce unwanted contact during a fall. The additional separation can also reduce interaction between the board, foil, wing, or parawing, helping limit impacts that may lead to canopy tears or bladder punctures.
No leash can eliminate every risk associated with foiling, but the RE_Tractable is designed to provide a cleaner and more controlled connection during a crash.
Does the RE_Tractable automatically pull the board back toward the foiler?
No. The spring tension is specifically tuned to help keep the board at a safer distance after a crash rather than immediately pulling it back toward the body.
When you are ready to retrieve the board, a light, consistent pull allows the webbing to retract smoothly into the housing.
What is the internal spring made from?
The RE_Tractable uses a PVD coated titanium spring. This material and coating provide excellent corrosion resistance and reliable operation in saltwater environments.
How should the RE_Tractable be maintained?
After every saltwater session, flush the unit thoroughly with fresh water. Allow the water to move through the housing to remove salt, sand, and other residue, then let the leash dry naturally before extended storage.
No complicated maintenance schedule is required. A consistent fresh water rinse is the recommended practice.
What is the purpose of the dual stage shock cord bungee?
The dual stage shock cord bungee helps absorb sudden loads before they are transferred directly to the board’s leash plug. It also increases the potential separation between the board, foiler, and other equipment during a crash.
During normal foiling, the bungee helps keep the connection lightly tensioned and away from the foot area. It is also less harsh underfoot than a thicker urethane leash if it is stepped on during a transition.
Does the leash include a swivel?
Yes. A free spinning stainless steel swivel allows the board connection to rotate, helping reduce accumulated twists in the bungee and retractable webbing.
What foiling disciplines is the RE_Tractable designed for?
The RE_Tractable is specifically designed for wing foiling, parawinging, and downwind foiling.
Its compact design keeps excess leash material out of the working area around the board, while its tuned extension and retraction help manage the specific equipment interactions associated with these disciplines.
What RE_Tractable configurations are available?
The RE_Tractable is available in three configurations:
Base Leash: Designed for integration with an existing harness, waist belt, or custom attachment system. Hardware and webbing loops are included for most custom mounting options.
Waist Belt: A complete waist mounted system with a padded neoprene belt and secure double back buckle connection.
Calf Wrap: A lower leg configuration for foilers who prefer to keep the waist available for a harness, stash bag, hydration system, or waist mounted wing leash.
Which RE_Tractable configuration should I choose?
Choose the Base Leash if you already have a secure harness or belt and want the flexibility to create a custom attachment.
Choose the Waist Belt if you prefer to keep the board leash connection above the legs and away from the feet.
Choose the Calf Wrap if you want to keep your waist available for a wing leash, parawing harness, foil harness, stash bag, or hydration system.
Can the RE_Tractable leash be used in the surf?
Yes, the RE_Tractable can be used in the surf. However, we do not recommend using it in critical surf conditions.
The additional leash length can increase board recovery time, and the extended webbing may wrap around the foil mast when the foiler and board are separated in whitewater.
For overhead high or more consequential surf conditions, we recommend using a traditional straight or coiled board leash.
Is the buckle connection on the waist belt strong?
Yes. The double back nylon buckle is strong, reliable, and secure.
This design eliminates the pinching release mechanism found on standard quick release buckles, which can fatigue over time and create a potential weak point. Combined with the neoprene safety sleeve, the double back buckle provides a dependable connection for the RE_Tractable waist belt.
Can a harness line hook be added to the waist belt?
Yes. The Ride Engine NUG hook integrates with the waist belt of the RE_Tractable leash and provides a compact, reliable harness line connection.
However, for long sessions or extended upwind reaches, we recommend using a purpose built harness.
Can the Base Leash be attached to any belt or harness?
The Base Leash is designed to work with a wide range of existing belt and harness configurations, and mounting hardware is included for most custom attachment options.
Before entering the water, confirm that the mounting point is structurally secure, all hardware is installed correctly, and the leash does not interfere with any harness releases or other essential equipment.
Does the RE_Tractable replace the need for good leash awareness?
No. The RE_Tractable reduces exposed leash material and helps create separation during crashes, but foilers should still remain aware of their equipment, surroundings, water conditions, and leash attachment points.
Always inspect the leash, webbing, bungee, swivel, belt, and board connection before entering the water.
